50 Years, 3 Pioneers
50 year musical commemoration evening celebrating West Ham United pioneering three black players in the same team for the first ever time.
About this event
On 1st April, 1972 Football League history was made when Clyde Best, Ade Coker and Clive Charles were selected to play against Spurs. It was first time three black players featured together in the same team. Coker, who would go on to become a USA international scored in the Hammers' 2-0 victory that day.
This moment in history went largely unnoticed. 50 years on, it is an event that should be celebrated as a key part of West Ham United Football Club and indeed football history. This momentous day was a full six years ahead of the first time that the ‘Three Degrees’ played together for West Brom, 4th March 1978 at Ipswich Town.
The evening will be a mixture of DJ music, live artists and interviews and of course, a video feed to Clyde and Ade. The evening is designed to be an informal time enjoying the music, hearing about West Ham in general as well talking about issues of equality, diversity, and inclusion. The ambition is to attract regular Hammers fans who might not normally go to a diversity event but would enjoying seeing and mingling with former players in a relaxed environment and listening to music.
