Irons Supporting Foodbanks
In December 2019, following consultation with Newham Council, LS185 and the LLDC, we were given permission to collect donations for the Newham Foodbank based in Beckton. They supply 7 distribution centres in the borough, 7 days a week, and hand out several hundred 3-day emergency food packs every month to families in need.
The demand on foodbanks had grown progressively and we were hopeful that with over 1 million visitors attending games at the London Stadium over a season, that we could make a difference to our local community. Following the successful trial at the Leicester City game, we were given permission to continue collecting at every home game, subject to any ‘high risk’ games. By the end of February we were collecting approx. £700 per game in food value and cash.
We are a small group of West Ham fans and friends collecting at home first team games from 3 hours before kick off. Our donation point is on Stratford Walk, opposite the Park Information Centre, on the route from Westfield to the Stadium.
Football Supporters’ Association
The FSA is the national, democratic, representative body for football supporters in England and Wales.
We are the leading advocates for supporter ownership, better fan engagement, cheaper ticket prices, the choice to stand at the match, protecting fan rights, good governance, diversity, and all types of supporter empowerment.
As the national organisation we have regular contact with the Premier League, the EFL, National League, and the FA, as well as a whole host of other organisations within football such as the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA).
Football is for all and we work closely with organisations such as Kick It Out and Level Playing Field to ensure that core belief is happening in the real world. We have supported the establishment of scores of BAME and LGBT fans’ groups over the past few seasons.
As secretariat to the All Party Parliamentary Football Supporters Group we have strengthened the voice of fans within Parliament in recent years.
Our casework helps hundreds of fans every year who feel they’ve been poorly treated by their clubs, stewards, or police. We give those fans a voice, the best possible advice, and even legal support where necessary.
West Ham United Foundation
As West Ham United's award-winning outreach vehicle, The Foundation's vision is to be the leading social and community outreach organisation providing inclusive, life-changing opportunities for residents in East London and Essex.
The programmes that the Foundation delivers are so extensive that former Premier League Chairman Richard Scudamore said "...among the 161 clubs, I don't think there's a single club I could name that does community engagement to the depth and with the real commitment that West Ham do"
Since the 2013/14 season there has been £6m invested into the local community, including £400,000 invested in the 3G pitch at Beckton, which hosts over 1000 participants every week. The Foundation is constantly working on changing both attitudes and lives, breaking down long standing barriers to create opportunities for more inclusive features. With over 35 active programmes the Foundation reaches over 40,000 people of all ages and abilities whilst tackling key issues including social deprivation and loneliness.
Football Supporters Europe
Football Supporters Europe (FSE) is the democratic voice of European football fans: Founded in 2008 and active in 55 UEFA nations.
With West Ham United participating in Europe for a 2nd season, we meet regularly with Football Supporters Europe for individual briefing sessions before our European matches and also to discuss issues that impact supporters across the whole of Europe.
They are an independent, non-profit association of fans recognised as a representative body on fan issues by institutions such as UEFA and the Council of Europe.
They understand that fans are the heart and soul of football. They believe fans are entitled to watch their team in a safe environment, whatever their background, enjoy the same freedoms as the general public, and have a bigger say on how the game is run. And they envisage a more equal, competitive, and sustainable football—one that works for everybody, not just a select few.
To this end, they are committed to lobbying UEFA and other governing bodies on everything from maintaining sporting merit in European competitions and protecting domestic football to defending fans’ rights and lower ticket prices.
